Weekend camps
The first experience HCYLP offers to participants is weekend camp held at Kanuga Conference Center’s Camp Bob. HCYLP holds a session at Camp Bob in the fall (usually in September) for 60-70 3rd/4th graders. A spring session is held (usually in April) for 60-70 5th/6th graders.
Desired program outcomes for children attending the weekend session at Camp Bob include growth in citizenship, confidence, resourcefulness and leadership. It is hoped that the weekend, plus further participation in the HCYLP program, would lead to improved school performance and – through being able to earn the next step in the program through citizenship and effort – reinforcement in learning that effort and good character pay dividends. An important outcome for HCYLP from Camp Bob is an evaluation of the camper’s experience and a recommendation for weeklong camp. Evaluations are completed by the camper’s cabin counselor. Each cabin counselor is asked to recommend 5-7 campers for weeklong camp.
