Partners & Grantors
PARTNERS
Primary program partners of the Henderson County Young Leaders Program include the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County, the Henderson County Public Schools, and camps from the Western North Carolina Camp Community . Most recently, Larry Clouse , who grew up in Hendersonville, launched the Bill Bailey Memorial Fund to help honor his childhood friend. We are also fortunate to have grantors who help throughout the year.
Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County
The partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County has been key to HCYLP growth, ongoing operations, and long-term program success. The Boys & Girls Club provides the following to HCYLP:
- Referrals of over 1/3 of the youth served by HCYLP
- The use of the Boys & Girls Club facility for camper drop off and registration and post camp pick up for campers and their families for weekend and weeklong camp sessions. The facility is also used as needed for HCYLP events including some Pathmakers activities.
- The use of passenger vans and commercial bus (as needed) for transport of HCYLP campers to/from camp sessions and for Pathmakers program activities (approximately 8 activities per year).
- 1-2 staff members for staffing of weekend camp sessions.
- A staff person to serve as an HCYLP liaison throughout the year to work with Boys & Girls Club youth and their families relative to all HCYLP activities; including selection of initial referrals, participant communication and support, camp session leadership support, and year around program facilitation.
Henderson County Public Schools
In addition to nominations from the Boys & Girls Club, participants in HCYLP experiences are initially nominated by elementary and middle school counselors and teachers from Henderson County Public Schools (HCPS). HCYLP receives nominations from 13 elementary and 4 middle schools from within the county. Teachers and counselors from within the school system help the HCYLP management team monitor and evaluate the progress of program participants ongoing. For more information about the HCPS, visit http://www.henderson.k12.nc.us/.
Western North Carolina Camp Community
The HCYLP could not operate its program without the support of the Western North Carolina summer camp community. Local camps provide the facilities and staff for our weekend and weeklong camp experiences, fundraisers, and some Pathmakers activities. Local camps also provide the full-session scholarships that HCYLP participants can earn upon successful completion of HCYLP activities.
Twenty-two HCYLP participants were awarded full-session scholarships for the summer of 2010. Sessions range from a full week to almost 6-weeks in length and the value of the scholarships range from $500 to over $5,500. Like teachers and counselors, camp professionals also play an integral role in the ongoing monitoring and evaluation of program participants.
“David attended one of the April camp sessions. He came back a new kid! He is speaking up more and seems to be more confident. He asked to share his experience with the class (which was his first time volunteering to speak in front of the class). He would not have had an opportunity to attend camp without these programs.” −Teacher from local elementary school.

Larry Clouse
Larry Clouse, a Colorado-based photojournalist specializing in editorial, sports, documentary and portrait work, grew up and went to school in Hendersonville, NC. Larry learned about the Henderson County Young Leaders Program in 2009 and supports the program via the Bill Bailey Memorial Fund as a way to keep the memory of his lifelong friend, Bill Bailey, alive. Bill, a long time summer camper, had a passion for sharing the outdoors with children through summer camp opportunities. Forty-percent of the proceeds from Larry’s The Saunterers Collection is donated to the Henderson County Young Leaders Program.
