Weeklong camp
Campers recommended by their counselors at HCYLP Weekend Camp are invited to attend the HCYLP Weeklong Camp session the following August. Weeklong camp is hosted by Camp Ton-A-Wandah and is the second step in the progression earned by participants in our program. HCYLP Weeklong Camp focuses on the core values (character, community, sportsmanship, work, and fun) that are at the heart of Ton-A-Wandah’s traditional programming. The goal of the session is to provide campers with opportunities that may otherwise be unattainable, and to give campers the tools to gain self-confidence, learn to build trust among peers and elders, and work as a ...
Our Programs
The Henderson County Young Leaders Program believes that the camp experience provides unique opportunities for building character, leadership and resourcefulness in young people. We seek to enhance youth development by providing a progressive program of residential camp, mentoring and education experiences for Henderson County children who would otherwise lack such opportunity. Following is a diagram showing the phases a participant goes through as part of the HCYLP. Click on each item for additional details on that program. When this process is complete, the hope is that the young people served by HCYLP will become future leaders within ...
Camper referrals
Participants in HCYLP experiences are initially nominated to the program by school counselors, teachers, the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County, and other supervising adults from within the community. Children nominated are those demonstrating leadership potential who may benefit from a camp experience, but who may lack opportunity. Each participant has the opportunity to earn a progression of camp experiences and a year-around mentoring and education program, Pathmakers. Participants in the Pathmakers program may become eligible for full camp scholarships provided by the local camp community. HCYLP acknowledges and thanks the Henderson County Public Schools and the Boys & Girls ...
Full scholarship camp sessions
As a result of positive performance in Pathmakers activities, children may earn scholarships for multi-week residential summer camp experiences offered by participating summer camps. The camp sessions range from 2-5 weeks in length and have a tuition value ranging from $1,110 to $5,600. Youth who progress to this point have the opportunity to fully realize the impact they can have on their community, family and themselves. It is not uncommon for Pathmakers to be invited back to camp the following summer if they do well with their experience. HCYLP will also nominate youth for repeat camp experiences based on performance. Full ...
Weekend camps
The first experience HCYLP offers to participants is weekend camp held at Kanuga Conference Center’s Camp Bob. HCYLP holds a session at Camp Bob in the fall (usually in September) for 60-70 3rd/4th graders. A spring session is held (usually in April) for 60-70 5th/6th graders. Desired program outcomes for children attending the weekend session at Camp Bob include growth in citizenship, confidence, resourcefulness and leadership. It is hoped that the weekend, plus further participation in the HCYLP program, would lead to improved school performance and – through being able to earn the next step in the program through citizenship and ...
Year-round program: Pathmakers
HCYLP participants who are successful at Weekend Camp and Weeklong Camp are invited to participate in the our third level of progression, Pathmakers, which meets once per month during the school year. Pathmakers meetings are run in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County for youth in grades 4 through 8. The goal of the program is to reinforce the gains made by attendees from previous years’ camp experiences through experiential activities that teach leadership skills. Monthly Pathmakers activities are designed to be fun for the participants with emphasis on community service, learning, and personal development. Activities include ...
